With all the joy and excitement of a new baby also comes a little worry. Introducing the right foods at the right times, watching for developmental milestones, keeping a watchful eye out for signs and symptoms of sickness – it can all be a little overwhelming.

One of the more common conditions parents should be on the lookout for is RSV, or Respiratory Syncytial Virus, a serious respiratory infection that not only impacts babies, but people of all ages. However, due to your infant’s developing immune system, this type of virus is more serious in little ones than it is in older adults.

RSV is most commonly transmitted between November and April, or the common “cold and flu” season. However, it can be transferred at any time of year. In general, this virus tends to follow a fairly set timeline, with symptoms peaking around the 5th day of illness.

Recognize the symptoms
In older children, RSV symptoms can look similar to the common cold; however, in babies, the signs and symptoms of this virus are much more serious. Here are some of the symptoms of RSV:

It is important to note that some babies are more vulnerable to RSV, including premature babies and those who already have existing heart and lung issues.

RSV cases can range from mild to quite severe, and if your baby starts to exhibit some of the more severe symptoms, seek medical care immediately.
