Finding a Pediatrician Who Accepts Medicaid: Why It Matters More Than You Think
More than 37 million children in the United States are enrolled in Medicaid or the Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP) – that’s nearly 1 in 2 kids, according to an American Academy of Pediatrics analysis of CMS data. In 26 states, at least half of all children rely on Medicaid or CHIP for their healthcare. But coverage alone doesn’t guarantee care. One of the most persistent and least talked about barriers families face is finding a pediatrician who actually accepts it.
A MACPAC analysis found that pediatricians accepted new Medicaid patients at a meaningfully lower rate than privately insured patients; this is largely due to lower reimbursement rates, which make it challenging for providers to sustain Medicaid-heavy patient panels long-term. According to 2023 Child Core Set data, only 59% of children in Medicaid received the recommended six well-child visits in their first 15 months of life, and just 65% received the recommended visits between 15 and 30 months – critical windows for developmental screenings, immunizations, and early intervention. For many families, the search for a Medicaid-accepting pediatrician isn’t a minor inconvenience; it’s a barrier that prohibits or delays care and puts children’s health and well-being at risk.
At Pediatrica, providing equitable access to quality, compassionate care for all kids is our purpose. Equipping providers with the resources, technology, and support they need to make it happen is just one of the ways Pediatrica is driving impactful change in the pediatric primary care landscape. We proudly accept Medicaid throughout all our Florida practices, and we have extended hours, same-day sick appointments, 24/7 on-call providers, and compassionate care teams ready to help families’ whole health, physically, developmentally, and behaviorally. The data is clear, continuous, consistent access to a trusted pediatrician creates better health outcomes for kids, helping them grow into healthy adults. The ripple effect of this early intervention has the potential to ease the burden on our healthcare system overall for years to come. That’s Pediatrica’s Next Generation CareSM, and it starts here.
